Auto Accessorizing

Customizing one’s car has been a popular pastime since the dawn of the automobile. Initially a hobby for the rich man, by the 1940s it had reached everyman. Enthusiasts would take it to the next level during the muscle car era of the late 60s and early 70s. Then a renaissance would emerge in the 1990s, one powered by urban youth with a focus on fast, affordable import cars. In its wake, the automotive aftermarket industry transformed from focusing on niche aficionados to bringing aftermarket accessories to the masses. Here is a look at the aesthetics and practicality of today’s most popular accessories.

Window deflectors are by far the most popular automotive accessory, so much so that it has become common to see them included as standard equipment. Favored in a smoke-colored plastic, they are also available in chrome, opaque and colored varieties. Deflectors are not simply an attractive visual cue. They are convenient when you want to crack the windows while keeping the rain, wind and wind noise out.

Another beloved car accessory is the full-frontal mask, known commonly as a bra. Traditionally constructed of black vinyl, these form-fitting covers hug the vehicle’s front end. In addition to being an electric accent that coordinates with any paint color, the mask protects the area of the car most often abused by road debris. However, one of the downsides to a full-frontal mask is that it hides the grille, a focal point on most vehicles.

That drawback has given rise to mini-masks, which just cover the hood portion of the vehicle. However, the mini-masks have never gained the popularity of bug/hood shields. Hood protectors, generally fashioned of the same material and in the same style as window deflectors, provide a distinct complement to any car’s front end. They also do a great job of protecting your hood from debris. Because of names like “Bugflector”, many people incorrectly assume that they keep your windows free of dead bugs. These customers are usually disappointed.

Headlight and taillight covers have become popular and polarizing. They have even led to legislation regulating them or outlawing them outright. There is no doubt that these covers are magnificent accents that provide any car a smooth, continuous profile. Unfortunately, they dangerously lessen the amount of headlamp light illuminating the road. If you choose them, opt for stronger lights or consider the “slots” variant, which allows the light to pass through normally.
